What are the differences between Quick Filter, Normal filter and Context filter?”]Differences between Quick Filter, Normal filter, and Context filter is one of the top real-time tableau interview questions. Let’s get into details of the filters in Tableau.

Tableau provides three kinds of filters, those are-

  • Normal Filter
  • Quick Filter and
  • Context Filter

We will see each one in detail here.
Normal Filter: It is used to filter the database/dataset based on the selected measure or dimension. Just drag a measure in the filters shelf and it will be a normal filter.

Normal Filter in TableauQuick Filter: It is used to filter each worksheet by changing the values dynamically during run-time. Here the user can dynamically change the data during run-time.

Now to create a quick filter in Tableau, click on the filter dimension you fragged in the case of the normal filter and click on show filter. You will find that filter with all the options available at the top-right.

Quick Filter in TableauContext Filter: In context filter, the filter is first applied to the data source and then some additional filters can be applied to the resulting records.

Context filter is very useful when you’re dealing with large datasets. It improves the performance of the query.

Whenever you create context filter in Tableau, Tableau creates a temporary table for this particular set and then other filters will be applied to this context filter.

Now to create a context filter in the tableau, we will create two worksheets and then we will combine both the worksheet in a dashboard. Then use the one filter dependable on another filter.[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”3. What are different file formats in Tableau”]In Tableau, we have mainly three file formats-

  • twb: It is an XML document which will have all the layouts and graphs you have made in tableau worksheet and dashboard. It doesn’t contain any data.
  • tde: This is tableau data extract which contains the dataset used to create tableau dashboards
  • twbx: twbx file format is the combination of twb and tde file format. That means it will have both layouts as well as data. It is advisable to share the files in twbx file format while sharing the file.
[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”4. What is data blending in Tableau?”]Data blending in the tableau is one of the very important features and is also one of the top tableau interview question.

It is a technique to bring the data from more than one data sources without any special coding.

For example, if you have one data in Excel sheet while other in SQL, then you can perform the data blending based on a common column.

Here are some scenarios when you need to use data blending in Tableau-

• Data in different sources
• Filter on secondary dimension fields
• Use secondary dimensions in the view
• Link data between two data sources using fields that are not in the view

Make sure to use blending when you have data in two or more different sources. Data in two different worksheets in Excel is not considered as two different sources and joins will be used.[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”5. When to use Joins and Data blending”]You can see from Q4 to check what is data blending in Tableau. Joins is used to find the aggregated data from the same source using some relations.

How to find the employees whose salary is more than the average salary”]This is basically a SQL question but you should be prepared to answer such questions in Tableau interview. So, we will also consider this as Tableau interview question for this post.

Let’s suppose we have the below table in SQL named emp-

Name Designation Salary
John Analyst 1000
Chris Developer 2000
Jamie Tester 1500
Jason BA 3000

Now we have to find the Name of the employee whose salary is more than the average salary of all employee. Just put the basic calculation and you will find the average salary, in this case, is 1875. And so, in our result, we should have Chris and Jason as the final dataset.

Let’s write a query for this and see how it can be done.

FInd Salary more than average salary[/vc_cta][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_cta h2=”7. What is dynamic filter and how to create dynamic filter in Tableau”]Dynamic filter is something which allows you to change the graph based on the selection made in run time.
